Yanin Bandhaya,
based on a proposal by Suneil Sanzgiri

Teo Ala-Ruona is a Helsinki-based performance and visual artist and educator. Their work focuses on queer speculative fiction in forms of speech performances, texts, sound installations, video, community organizing and workshops. They explore topics of sex, ecology, toxicity and gender through re-defining language and stories telling about pleasure and intimacy on a toxic Earth. Their work experiments with the potentiality of words as a way of building queerer worlds and bodies.

They often deal with sexuality and embodied interrelations between human and more-than-human bodies, looking especially at the complicated intertwinement of environmental toxicities, transbodies and queer desire, and the ways in which this is discussed in science and popular media discourses.

Ala-Ruona’s work has recently been shown in Titanik-gallery (Turku), Mad House (Helsinki) and NAVEL, Gas-gallery and Human Resources (Los Angeles). Ala-Ruona has graduated from Master’s Programme in Art Education at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture in 2016 and from Master’s Programme in Ecology and Contemporary Performance, at Helsinki Theatre Academy in 2018.
